9% Fall In Motorcycle Deaths - Still Take Care This Summer

The latest statistics released by the government for the 2012 year suggest a 9% fall in motorcycle accident fatalities in the past year; this is said to be coupled with a 4% drop in the number of motorcycle accident casualties in the same period. However, as is often the case with statistics –caution is needed when interpreting what this means in terms of the safety of motorcyclists on the UK roads. This sadly does not mean that our roads have become substantially safer for vulnerable road users, such as motorcyclists, in the past year.

The figure may be explainable by increased rainfall in the summer months of 2012. The highest motorcycle usage occurs over summer time. Warm and dry weather is ideal for bikers but the summer of last year was absolutely not warm and dry. The wet weather may have put many motorcyclists off using their preferred form of transport for this season. In fact, the 2012 period saw a 2% drop in motorcycle users. A lower number of motorcycle users simply meant there was a lower likelihood of motorcycle users being involved in a collision.

Wet weather also meant that for the motorcyclists who were still on the road, they were in greater danger: greater danger of skidding, of their bike losing control on a wet manhole cover and subject to the longer stopping distances for all road users. Therefore the smaller number of motorcyclists riding in the wet weather would have had a larger proportion of accidents compared to a group of the same size in dry weather. What this means then is – riding a motorcycle is still dangerous and you are still a vulnerable road user. The statistics are not reflective of what it means to ride a motorbike on UK roads in usual summer conditions.

So this summer, when you are enjoying the beautiful hot weather that we Brits always long after, make sure you are riding your motorbike carefully. Other road users should also take heed. Non-motorcyclists are the main cause of motorcycle accidents. It is all too easy to forget to ‘look, look and look again’ at a t-junction, and this causes crashes. So take your time to look for motorcycles whilst you are on the roads this summer. No doubt the warm weather is going to lead to increased motorbikes on our roads so let’s work together to ensure this does not mean there will be increased motorcyclist deaths on our roads.

Testimonials

Since contacting Stan I was continously informed of the development and progress of each step of my claim. Stan was persistent and patient throughout the whole process and reassured me he would win me the compensation I deserved - and he was true to his word. I am extremely happy with the outcome of my claim and this is all thanks to Stan.

Sarah

My case was dealt with personally by Stan Moffat and what a brilliant guy. His office contacted me personally by telephone at the start of my claim to explain who they were and what they would be doing for me. All through the case I was kept fully informed of all actions either by e-mail or by letter and reassured by Stan several times of any queries I had.

It is very seldom that a solicitor will take the time to speak personally at any time with you without getting run through secretaries etc. I commend this man for that as this was a very upsetting and important time for me and he did everything in his power to make this as easy and as swift as possible for me.

I highly recommend the service that this firm brings and the speed that they move at.
