Causes of Road Traffic Accidents

According to the Royal Society of the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) most of the accidents which occur on UK roads are down to driver error. Previous studies have found that driver error can explain 65% of accidents on Britain’s roads. 3746 less people died following collisions in the year of 2012 than were killed in collisions 30 years ago. So the amount of fatalities which arise following road traffic accidents has dropped even though the amount of traffic on the roads has increased – but the main cause of accidents remains the same.

The Top Ten Causes of Road Traffic Accidents

1. Failed to look properly 35%

2. Failed to judge other person's path or speed 18.9%

3. Careless, reckless or in a hurry 16.2%

4. Loss of control 14.7%

5. Poor turn or manoeuvre 14.1%

6. Travelling too fast for the conditions 10.2%

7. Slippery road due to weather 10.1%

8. Pedestrian failed to look properly 7.2%

9. Sudden braking 7.2%

10. Following too close 6.7%

These are the top ten causes of road traffic accidents across both rural and urban roads. However, it must be noted that in urban areas the actions of pedestrians are noted as causes of accidents quite commonly, which is not the case in rural areas. Also, in rural regions a driver’s inexperience enters the top ten causes of accidents – the driver may be a learner, a new driver or someone who has little experience of rural roads.

The Top Nine Causes of Road Traffic Accident Fatalities

ROSPA have identified the nine most common causes of road traffic accidents fatalities as being: - speeding, drink driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, careless driving, inexperience, failure to look properly, loss of control, failure to judge the speed or direction of another person and at-work accidents.

So what can be clearly seen from this information, is that actually you are actually the biggest danger on the roads – not faulty brakes, a burst tyre or dodgy roads. Although all these things do play their own part in road traffic accidents, their effect is paltry compared to that of human error. In fact, vehicle defects do not even make it into the top ten causes of road traffic accidents.

Therefore, when you are making trips this summer – to see family or to go on holiday – please take care. Take regular breaks so you don’t lose concentration and constantly adapt your driving for the conditions and the road you are on.

Testimonials

Since contacting Stan I was continously informed of the development and progress of each step of my claim. Stan was persistent and patient throughout the whole process and reassured me he would win me the compensation I deserved - and he was true to his word. I am extremely happy with the outcome of my claim and this is all thanks to Stan.

Sarah

My case was dealt with personally by Stan Moffat and what a brilliant guy. His office contacted me personally by telephone at the start of my claim to explain who they were and what they would be doing for me. All through the case I was kept fully informed of all actions either by e-mail or by letter and reassured by Stan several times of any queries I had.

It is very seldom that a solicitor will take the time to speak personally at any time with you without getting run through secretaries etc. I commend this man for that as this was a very upsetting and important time for me and he did everything in his power to make this as easy and as swift as possible for me.

I highly recommend the service that this firm brings and the speed that they move at.
