Common Cycling Accidents And Their Causes

Riding a bike is a healthy way to travel – however, sometimes accidents do happen and more often than not it is not the cyclist who is at fault. Of the accidents that are reported to the police, every year in the UK approximately 19,000 cyclists are killed or injured in an cycling accident on the roads. If you have been involved in a cycling accident that was not your fault you may be able to make a claim for financial compensation for the injuries that you have suffered. Read on to find out more about some of the most common cycling accidents.

Common Accidents Involving Bikes

  • Cycling accidents at a junction: - According to figures from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents – most cycling accidents occur near or at a junction.
  • Cycling accidents involving children: - 10-15 year old cyclists are the most at risk group for cycling accident involvement. This may be because children are more likely to use a bike as their main form of transport at this age, prior to them being old enough to learn to drive. Teenage children are also more likely to engage in slightly risky behaviour compared to other age groups.
  • Cycling accidents in urban areas: - over half of cyclist deaths occur in urban areas and 75% of total serious or fatal cycling accidents occur in urban areas.
  • Cycling accidents at peak times: - the more cyclists there are on the roads, the more accidents there are. Therefore cycling accidents are more common during the daytime and during the summer months when the weather is good.

Common Causes of Cycling Accidents

  • Failure to observe: A failure to observe is a huge cause cycling accidents in general. In relation to cycling accidents a failure to observe can be either on the part of the cyclist or on the part of another road user. In 57% accidents the car driver is attributed a failure to observe and in 43% a cyclist is attributed a failure to observe. Often, a vehicle will turn into a cyclist in their blind spot without realising they are there. If you or a loved one has been involved in an accident like this you should contact a lawyer immediately.
  • Driver’s carelessness during a manoeuvre or turn
  • Driver engaging in careless driving, reckless driving or ‘in a hurry’
  • Cyclist entering the road from the pavement
  • Cyclist riding too fast or playing on a bike

Since contacting Stan I was continously informed of the development and progress of each step of my claim. Stan was persistent and patient throughout the whole process and reassured me he would win me the compensation I deserved - and he was true to his word. I am extremely happy with the outcome of my claim and this is all thanks to Stan.

My case was dealt with personally by Stan Moffat and what a brilliant guy. His office contacted me personally by telephone at the start of my claim to explain who they were and what they would be doing for me. All through the case I was kept fully informed of all actions either by e-mail or by letter and reassured by Stan several times of any queries I had.

It is very seldom that a solicitor will take the time to speak personally at any time with you without getting run through secretaries etc. I commend this man for that as this was a very upsetting and important time for me and he did everything in his power to make this as easy and as swift as possible for me.

I highly recommend the service that this firm brings and the speed that they move at.
